WE LIVE CURIOUSLY

August Morning Media is the creative home of award-winning director & producer SJ Johnson, specializing in nuanced human-interest storytelling that finds the extraordinary in everyday lives. From intimate documentary portraits to large-scale productions, SJ brings a director's eye for visual narrative & a producer's precision to every project—crafting stories that reveal the layers, contradictions, & truths that make us human.

Director. Producer. Story Architect.

I believe the best stories emerge when I listen first and produce second. My approach combines visual storytelling instincts with meticulous creative direction—whether I'm directing an intimate interview or high-energy women's sports feature, producing a primetime special or digital short, or shaping intersectional narratives about marginalized communities.

My work spans formats and platforms: documentaries, features, digital series, live events, podcasts, and more. What remains constant is my commitment to finding the unexpected angle, the untold perspective, the human thread that connects us all. Each project demands its own visual language and pacing, but the goal never changes: to create work that honors both the story and the storyteller.

I bring both creative vision and calculated execution to every project. I know how to navigate high-stakes productions covering multifaceted topics, guide talent & crew through vulnerable (or complicated, challenging, chaotic) moments, and deliver compelling content that resonates beyond its runtime.

My leadership philosophy is simple: the most authentic stories emerge when the right people tell them. I adapt my directing style to each project's needs while maintaining the editorial clarity that complex narratives demand.

This means being human-centered in every interaction, but also building teams with intention—ensuring our crews include voices and perspectives that reflect the communities and experiences we're documenting. Representation isn't just in front of the lens; it shapes every creative decision behind it.
